back from the wildes!
Oct. 29th, 2008 01:16 pmwell, what a lot to catch up on!
the ball was fab as usual, even better cause we were in regency for a change, i think the general consensus is we need to have a few regency balls in the regular calendar as well!
i spent a few evenings on holiday editing the video i took, i think i've done three of the dances, about half maybe? i'll try and get them up on you tube tonight when i get in from work. i took a couple of pics of our dresses too, so i'll get them up for your viewing pleasure soon as well! i did mummy's hair up in curlers all day and made her a turban of sorts, she looked so cool!
the holiday was just what we all needed, we hardly did anything, and got lots of early nights and, mosty important of all, had no internet to distract us! only thing is it was very cold :(
you expect rain in the lake district, but not so much cold in october. we were staying in a converted barn/old farmhouse, and the windows didn't fit tight to the frames and the kitchen was beautiful with windows on three sides and open up to the rafters, but that meant we couldn't get it warm!
clare was waiting for us when we got home (after a journey twice as long as it should have been due to some hideous traffic we tried to avoid) she came home for the weekend for some much needed family snuggles.
she was going to come with us on sunday when we went to a national trust place, but she has a stinking cold, and had to stay in bed. we went to kedleston hall, http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-kedlestonhall, where the duchess was filmed (along with chatsworth, we have a 2 for 1 voucher to use there in the spring when they re-open) and they had an exhibition on of some of her dresses! they wouldn't let us take photos though, but they were on dummies with nothing round them, so i could get my nose right up to them, and if i hadn't been so well behaved i could have ignored the 'please don't touch' noticesand lifted skirts and lace and things to see what was underneath! they have more dresses at chatsworth too. one thing that struck me was how many fabrics they used, lots of the robings were made of ruched stripes, frayed on the edges, and they had several layers, mostly metalic organza, of different colours. i wish i could have taken pictures, i could have shared them with you all :( i still haven't seen the film, it's not on here anymore, but a friend's dad has a naughty copy she's going to lend me :p
in costuming news, i made a pair of mittens and started a sontag on holiday, and i've got all the fabrics sorted for our winter clothes. we're going to a victorian festival in portsmouth at the end of november, and there's a victorian market the first weekend of december, and i refuse to be as cold as i was the first time! so, plans so far are:
mummy has a woolen dress, and a cloak, which, while not the warmest, is long and better than nothing! so clare's making her some mittens, and i'm making a red riding hood http://flickr.com/photos/27175266@N00/1485108987/ from navy wool with pale prussian blue silk lining. if i have time i'll make a sack coat form the navy and blue, that she can wear under her cloak, and we can use when it's a bit warmer. she can also use the grey muff from coco.
i need rather more :) i'm starting with my coat, i figure i can cope (ish!) without a wool dress, but not without a coat! i've got some mushroomy cotton velvet (that a certain person gave me!!) and i'm lining it with some polly (ack!) taffeta in a kind of brassy gold colour, and i'm trimming it with bias bands of wool plaid, in goldy and black colours. then i'm going to make a muff from some cream rabbit fur, and use the same fur to trim a hood (the quilted cap here http://www.marquise.de/en/1800/schnitte/s1800a.shtml ) made from cream taffeta linind and trimmed in the left over pink from my ballgown. my mittens are blue, so sounds like i'll clash nicley! but they go together really well! my dress will be aubergine (eggplant) purple wool, trimmed with blck silk sattin ribbon (if it ever gets here!!) and my sontag is grey, probably trimmed with fluffy pale sky blue.
wow, that's rather a lot! but i think i can do it, and i don't think i'll be silly and try to hand quilt this time! i'll save that for the 18th century petticoat, if i ever get round to it, which i probably won't since i'm using the fabric to line mummy's hood!
where did my lunch break go :(
