regency dresses
Apr. 23rd, 2009 05:27 pmWell, now that I've recovered from the ball (and it's crazy sewing!) I'm ready to start working on our regency day dresses - we need them for the 20 something of May, we're doing a dance demo of 3 different periods, 18th century, Regency and Victorian. I wanted to make Mummy's first. Since Mummy's ball gown has a ripped sleeve she needs something to wear, so i figured if something goes horridly wrong, i can at least wear my ball gown, but she can't.
I bought her a pretty sprigged print cotton, but it needed washing, and i've been working all week, so i put it in the wash after we came home from an abortive trip to the dentist (it turns out our appointment was for tomorrow, but she's off sick anyway, so now we're going in May when Clare's home for her reading week, more lovely anticipation!) I hung it on the line and it was dry in about half an hour!! but i was already set to start mine, so it's going to have to wait a bit ;)
I wanted to make my white stiped muslin, but that also needs to be pre-washed, so I decided to make up a very pretty pale prussian blue tissue fine silk taffeta I bought aaages ago. It's the silk that i lined Mummy's hood with, so i may have to do some piecing for the sleeves, but it's so light and pretty. I could not decide what style to do, so I trawled round the internets and all my books, till I finally decided! I'm making a drawstring bodice, and found
jennylafleur's step by step soooo helpful! Thank you!! And I'm hoping I'll be able to squeeze elbow length sleeves out of it, I may make them like a 2 piece coat sleeve? Now I just have to decide if I want to hand sew it or not, I think I will hand sew it, then I can take it to work with me tomorrow for when i get bored and need a break!
I'm very pleased because I have a piece of fine wool in almost the exact same shade of blue that I'm going to make a spencer from, and hopefully trim it with the taffeta (something like the spencer in 19th century fashion in detail on page 21.) I can't even remember where the wool came from, i've had it for so long, and with any luck there will be JUST enough!!! But knowing my luck I'll have to piece the spencer sleeves too!
