Horrid sewing :(
Aug. 16th, 2009 11:20 pmToday has been a not so fun day. I've been struggling with the white waist all day, and we had dance practice which took out all the evening.
First I was working on the sleeves. Well, I managed to make them too big, so took about a foot out of the width, then I realised my arm holes are not horrizontal enough for rectangular sleeves, so I scooped out the underarm section of the sleeves and regathered them. Then I remembered the little cap lining sleeves, cut them out, and was putting the first one into the armhole to discover it was too small :( So out it comes again, and I put in a section under the arm, no one will know! SO back in the sleeves go, now complete. I managed to sew over the piping so out comes a 2" section to be fixed. Then I did the cuffs. They're the wrong way round, but that's OK, I'll just get my lady's maid (AKA mother or sister!) to button them for me. When I tried it on I found that having more fullness on the top of the arm means you need more fullness on the corresponding bit of the cuff or the cuff rolls round your wrist! This is OK though, because the sleeves are so full that you can't see it (notice a trend here?!) This all took us to dancing time, so I had a break! But not a very restful break!! The Caledonian Quadrille is a very exhausting dance!!!
So now I've juts finished trying it on, the sleeves are great and the gathering on the bodice is actually flattering! But the waistband is a bit too high, but luckily I knew something would be wrong so I only pinned it on for the fitting. See, I've learnt something from today - with this outfit, if it can go wrong, it will go wrong!
I've also come to the conclusion that I probably won't have time to get to my swiss waist :( So I'm going to make a black velvet ribbon sash with a floofy bow and tails that I can either wear with the bow in front or with the bow in back and a gorgeous rhinestone buckle a friend gave me at the front.
