I got home from work late because of going to the supermarket on the way, and as soon as I'd finished my supper I was off to a friends to learn all about growing apples! She told us about the old apples in Leicestershire and the ones they thought had died out that they find in gardens, and the chance seedlings that have grown into really tasty apples that they've found in woods and fields and on waste ground or at the sides of rods. Then we grafted apples onto rootstock for our gardens. I put 4 different apples onto a young tree (that I bought in a supermarket of all places!) so it now will hopefully bear 5 different types of apple, the original which was a Braeburn; a new seedling they found, a desert apple called Calla Collosus that is the size of a football! a cooker from the 18thC called Queen Charlotte; and another old apple, a desert apple called Croft's Red Devil that has a beautiful pinky-red skin and dark pink flesh. I hope they take!!
Tomorrow I'm going to a flee market in the morning, work after that and then hopefully sewing when I get home!
