I had to really squeeze to get the dress out of 4yds of 44" fabric, so I did a cross between a fitted back and a normal chemise dress. There is a waist seam, and I put the pattern pieces for the back on the fabric, spreading them out to fit the fabric I had, then gathered the skirt onto the bodice back, and treated them as one.
