this is a china plate, one of a pair, of my great grandfather as a little boy, it looks so much like clare that granny said she was to have him, so now she does :) his sister lives with my great aunt, and will be coming to me in due course, as she looks so much like me as a little girl, and they must stay togeter.

there is a lock of hair in a paper packet, that has always been known as grandfathers first curls!

these pictures we know are family, the resemblance of the little girl to both granny and aunty nic as a child are too strong, but we don't know who they are :(
they are pencil drawings highlighted with watercolours, in gorgeous oval gilt frames.

he's a very fine chap, and i remember talking to granny about the funny 'W' in his collar

the little girl is very pretty, and has such a lovely dress, it's just a shame you can't see more :)

what could be very exciting is that if she is who i hope she is i have a sampler made by her! but i'll need to do a lot more checking up before i can say so for sure, i'm hoping that someof the relatives might know more.

all in all i think i'm a very lucky girl, and i can't wait to get my new sewing room/dining room so i can put them all on the walls, constant inspiration :)

hee hee, i'm very lucky!
i thought the daguerreotypes would interest you very much, i'm not as knowledgeable as you, so i'm not sure if they are tin types or daguerreotypes or a mixture, or even what the difference is!

I'm not extremely knowledgeable about the types, however the way to tell a daguerreotype from an ambrotype is when you tilt a daguerreotype instead of seeing it as it should be, you see a negative image. When you tilt an ambrotype, the image looks as it should. Both are on glass, of course :)

I like both equally, and they're my favorite formats of old photography. They're really great, and have such detail.

hmmm, i'll have to unpack them and see if i can tell. i know, the detail is amazing! the photos really don't do them justice, they are so clear, once you see past the smuts and scratches.

How nice,
The two drawing portraits seems to be from early 19th century. You are lucky to have ansestors traced back that far.
I love walls full of old portrits, gives such a nice feeling that all your ansestors are there to guard you.

yes, early 19th century, the teens i would guess. we are very lucky to have so many family pictures. and my great grandfather's family has regicide in it's past! one of our ancestors signed charles the first's death certificate!! unfortunately we don't have a picture of him hanging on the wall! :p

One of my ancestors, Peter Tilton, according to the research a cousin I've never met did, "gave aid to General Whalley and General Goffe, two of the "judges" who sentenced Charles to execution in 1649. So we have something in common :)

I'm actually not descended from Peter, but rather his father, William. So one of my zillion times great uncles :)

hee hee, small world! i think the same applies to us, not the man himself but his brother. did something awful happen to him? ours was hung drawn and quartered, so not very pleasant!
when we were at a castle somewhere we found a copy of the death warrant (oops, sorry, in my previous post i put certificate, i meant warrant! he was one of the 12 who signed the warrant after the 'trial') and when we were looking for general harrison a chap was there looking for his ancestor, not the same man though, that would have been too spooky :p

I'm jealous! My grandmother was born in 1893 and had some wonderful old family photos and images. Some were so old that she wasn't sure who was portrayed. Unfortunately, her house burned in the early 1980s and the room which held them was the worst hit. No one was hurt (thankfully!) but pretty much everything in the house was lost. Such beautiful antiques and such.. so sad. I also don't have any baby photos as they were lost in the same fire. I have a few photos that were in frames that we were able to keep, but unfortunately they are burned to the glass of the old frames. They are precious to me nonetheless. :)

that's so sad. i'm glad no one was hurt, but loosing all of your memories like that must be so soul destroying.
