when we first brought winnie home, we kept her on a lead to meet the cat, there was lots of sniffing and mad tail wagging, but that was all. but yesterday morning she chased poor psyche out of the house when she went out for her morning widdle, and then later she chased her so hard that the poor cat was scared out of her wits, bigger than we've ever seen her before, a huge bottle brush tail, and she wouldn't come back in. psyche wouldn't come downstairs all of yesterday, and when clare went to get her, and had her on her lap and i had winnie on a very short lead, she went for her, not in an 'i want to play' way, but in a 'give me the fun moving toy, i want to get it' way. poor psyche is terrified, and winnie has picked up on the fact that we are worried and cross with her, but as far as she's concerned, small furies are for chasing, nothing more. we rang the kennels yesterday, and told them, they suggested muzzling winnie, or caging her, or the cat, or restricting psyche to one room, so she doesn't run away. we don't think any of this is fair, on either the cat or the dog, winnie needs a family that can love her unconditionally, with no cats :) so after the 'atack' last night we decided we shouldn't put either of them through anymore of it, so we rang them again this morning, and they were very understanding, and said, of course psyche comes first, and she mustn't be left in any danger, so we're taking winnie back in a few hours. we'll take all of her things with her, the bed i made her, the toys she's been playing with, and the food and grooming brush we bought her. also, although they say if a dog has to go back after 7 days you can have your money back, we'd rather they keep it, they do such a wonderful job, and never have enough money, so if our adoption fee can help someone else we'll be very happy.
all this is so sad, we'd been looking forward to getting another dog for so long, but we've come to the conclusion that psyche cannot be introduced to a grown dog, (unless it's much smaller than her! and clare hates chihuahuas!!) so we will have to get a puppy, someone she can whack, or at least someone she knows she's bigger than! and i love puppies so there is a silver lining :)

Poor Winnie! I'm glad you have a good rescue organization and she's such a lovely dog that she should't have a problem finding a new home. You're right, no one would be happy as it is.

Aww, what a shame. :( *hug* I wonder if Winnie being half greyhound was part of the problem? I think to a certain extent it's instinctive in greyhounds that "small and furry" = something to chase. An adult dog that has successfully lived with cats before might be better?

That is very sad news. Poor Winnie and poor Psyche. But she is a lovely dog and will find a family quickly, I am sure. At least the kennel knows about this behavior now so they can screen the families to find one perfect for her.

That's sad. I'm sorry to hear about poor Psyche. I hope you find one that works out better for everyone.

poor thing :) she is so lovely, and they were so understanding, we felt awful that we couldn't keep her, but they were wonderful, and pleased we had been sensible. she was very pleased to be there, which is good, so really she just had a nice little holiday :)

yes, a great shame. definitely, we were put off in the first place for just that reason, but we thought she had lived with with cats, maybe they stood up to her? psyche is a little softy :) we're going to play safe and have a puppy again, someone she is actually bigger than to start with, so she'll bop them one :)

yes :( but, as you say she is such a lovely dog, and she was absolutely wonderful with the 4 year old next door, and we told the rescue place so they know she'll be totally safe with a family with children.

So sorry! But everything happens for a reason, so there must be a little puppy out there that's meant to be with you. :)
