stuck for ideas
Jan. 7th, 2009 01:35 pmso, since i didn't post at all last month, you get looooads this week!
i'm a bit stuck with working out what to do with work. our yr 12 Alevel group (they're 17ish) have their exam in march. they're doing duologues, from 'playhouse creatures', nell gwyn and another early actress; 'amadeus', mozart and his wife; and 2 others that don't involve costuming. and their play is 'the importance of being ernest'
'amadeus' is fine, we did that a few years ago, and i have 18th century stuff i can lend constanza if the school dress is too big, and nell gwyn and the other actress i plan to dress as your typical wenchy trollopy historic slut :)
but i need new stuff for 'ernest', the period is 1890s/1900s ish, so i'm going with the style typical of all the productions of wilde's plays, with lots of inspiration from the film with rupert everest and colin firth :) (i get to watch it tonight, and get payed for it!!!)
cecily will wear this dress i made a couple of years ago

and gwendolyn will have a dress made from a hideous peach satin '80s ball gown with cream lace filling in the neckline and making a very high collar, i'm going to take some progress pics of the butchery i think :)
but lady bracknell is being played by a boy. i was trying to find a photo of him from the last play the group did, but last year's photos have been removed from the system. he's average height, and tubby. i don't want to put him in a corset, and don't have loads of time to get everything done, so nothing very elaborate. also we're doing it straight, not drag queen or pantomime dame. he and my boss want him in royal purple, so i was thinking of a long slightly swishy purple skirt, maybe with a black lace overskirt, and a loose purple shirt that we can blouse out over his tummy, for the pouter pigeon look. maybe with a low neck, filled in with a black lace high collar, and elbow length puffy sleeves and tight lace undersleevs? then his boy arms will be covered :) does this sound good? or does it sound too much like gwendolyn's dress style? the girl playing gwendoline is very very slim!
also, i'm a bit stuck with his hair. needs to be a wig, his own is very short, (not like most of the boys who have stupidly long hair!) so i cn't blend it in to a wig, and dark brown. mummy said he should have grey hair, but i think that this won't work so well, since he's so young. i was thinking a mousy brown or reddy blonde, i can always powder it, and if we go with red, i can use a wig i bought for myself and have since decided is not right for me. also, i want them to have gorgeous period correct hats, but the school budget won't stretch that far i think :( so maybe i'll bring my camera tomorrow and take pics of everything we have here, post them and see what you guys think. i'm sure i'll be able to adapt something, but my vision isn't always great, especially when all i really want to do is make something absolutely gorgeous, totally from scratch :)
then there's miss prism, cecily's governess/companion. the girl playing her is TINY. she's a size 4, UK 4, so, i don't know, US 0 maybe?! and my boss is unsure if she has an eating dissorder, so i have to be very careful about costume. the miss prisms from stage productions have been a mixture of fat and scrawny actresses, some in black some in more drab colours, and the one in the film is scrawny, and dressed in quite teens style outfits i think, long lines, with loose cardigans etc. maybe i'll just put her in a long black skirt and a white blouse, if we have one with frills or lace and a high neck i won't need to do anything else, a shawl or long waistcoat or cardigan, and the right hairstyle, and i should be ok.
costumes for the boys playing the ernests will be hired i think. the yr 12 plays always cost so much to put on, they're expensive, and since there are only a handful of students we don't have many ticket sales!
well, now i've written it all out, i feel a bit more certain what to do, still not too sure on lady b, but i'll come up with something :)
