i finally finished the plaid dress today! it has been sitting on my dress form in my bedroom, looking at me every time i got up or went to bed, or did anything in my room, for so long! i was so cross not having the time or energy to do anything to it, especially as i knew it was so nearly finished, all i had to do was sew on the buttons and make the collar and undersleeves and sort out the belt, but actually getting organised to start has been so hard these last couple of weeks. any way...

i'm sure everyone knows what the undersleeves are like, but this pic does show the pattern on the fabric really well. i need to sew buttons on to the wrist bands, i'll probably use some of my great great aunty vera's buttons, but the ones i want to use are so small, less than 1/4", so i can't even begin to contemplate making the button holes! i also need to replace the ribbon with cotton tape, it's poly satin so it's really slippery and the bows come undone.

the brooch is actually one of my great granny's buttons from a coat she had when she was a girl in the 1890s, it had 3 buttons and they were made into brooches for her grand-daughters, isn't it beautiful? the fastenings seem to be straining because my sister had me 'stick my neck out' for the photo! they don't normally;)

now i just (just!... ha ha!!) have to make the ball gown and a bonnet and i can move on to some regency goodness!
yay!

thank you, i think she would be very proud her button has gone so far down the generations.
using antique buttons on something doesn't seem as daunting as using lace or another antique trim, cos you can't really hurt the buttons, can you!
